Visa
If you're coming from abroad, securing a visa is often the first step toward your studies in Germany. Ensure you have all the necessary documents ready on time to make your start in Magdeburg smooth and hassle-free!
Use the Visa-Navigator from the German Federal Foreign Office for initial guidance!
Do I need a visa to study in Germany?
In most cases, yes! To enter and stay in Germany for study purposes, a student visa ("Visum zu Studienzwecken") is required. This visa is typically issued for one year. After arrival, you must apply for a residence permit at the Magdeburg Foreigners' Registration Office.
Important: Entry with a tourist visa or without a visa does not allow you to later apply for a residence permit for your studies.
Who is exempt from the visa requirement?
Citizens of the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland do not require a visa. Nationals from countries like Andorra, Australia, Brazil, El Salvador, Great Britain, Honduras, Israel, Japan, Canada, Monaco, New Zealand, San Marino, South Korea, and the USA can enter Germany visa-free. Upon arrival, you must apply for a residence permit for study purposes at the Foreigners' Registration Office.
How do I apply for a student visa ("Visa zu Studienzwecken")?
Apply for your visa at the German embassy in your home country. You will need:
- An admission letter from your university
- Proof of sufficient financial resources (minimum €992/month or €11,904/year as of November 2024)
- Additional country-specific documents
Tip: Visa applications can take several months. Apply early, even if you don't yet have a confirmed admission. You can enter with a prospective student visa ("Studienbewerbervisum") and later convert it into a residence permit for studies.
What documents are required for a visa application?
Ensure all documents are complete to expedite the visa process:
- Valid passport
- Proof of health insurance
- Proof of financial resources (e.g., bank statements or scholarship confirmation)
- Academic and language qualification certificates
- Admission letter from the university (if available)
- For a perspective student visa: recognized university entrance qualification
- Potentially a health certificate
Prospective Student Visa ("Studienbewerbervisum")
If you don't yet have university admission, you can apply for a persepective student visa, valid for three months. This allows you to meet admission requirements. If necessary, it can be extended by up to six months. Once admitted to a university or preparatory college, you can apply for a residence permit for study purposes. The financial proof requirement is the same: €992/month for the entire duration.
