Apply for a residence permit at the foreigners' office
Are you from the EU, EEA, or Switzerland?
Good news! You do not need a residence permit. After registering your residence in Magdeburg, you will simply receive a certificate of your right to reside.
Required documents:
- Proof of identity (passport or ID card)
- Biometric passport photo
- Confirmation of residence from your landlord
- Proof of health insurance
- Proof of financial support
Are you from outside the EU, EEA, or Switzerland?
Within 90 days of entering Germany (or at least eight weeks before your visa expires), you must apply for a residence permit for study purposes at the Foreigners’ Office.

- Proof of identity (passport with valid visa (additional page and entry stamp))
- Enrollment certificate from OVGU
- Proof of health insurance
- Proof of financial support (e.g., blocked account, financial guarantee or scholarship certificate)
- Rent certificate (filled out by your landlord)
- Copy of current residence title, if available

The Foreigners’ Office will contact you to schedule an in-person appointment. During this appointment, your biometric data (photo, signature, fingerprints) will be collected for your electronic residence permit (eAT).
